Therefore, legally speaking, there is ought to be no such thing as DSS. Hence, the reference as the Department of State Services (DSS) or secret police is politically expedient but legally incorrect. April 03 2024 | Radio Biafra It is no longer news that the South-East region of Nigeria has been witnessing serious security crisis in the last three years. This has devastated the area. The crisis has taken a destructive toll on the people of the region in terms of human lives and property. It has left in its trail, thousands of deaths and destruction of property worth billions of naira and displaced thousands from their ancestral homes. Many attempts have been made to apportion blame for the cause but none has boldly pinned it down to a particular issue. As part of the search for the root cause of the crises, a report on the security crisis in the region was unveiled last week in Enugu which attempted to identify some issues behind the crisis. The report by human rights groups blamed the unfortunate situation in the region on a complex web of issues such as mishandling of pro-Biafra agitation, insurgency, gun proliferation, and criminal politics by a corrupt political class; cultism and occultism, as well as impunity in law enforcement and the criminal justice system in the region. It also noted that these internal problems are compounded by external factors, including state-sponsored vigilantes, misappropriated funds, and political-crime links. The report, titled: Unveiling the Roots of Insecurity, healing the Wounds of Human Rights Violations in South-East Nigeria: A Path towards Peace, open democratic space, and a prosperous future, was put together by Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, RULAAC, in partnership with Action Group on Free Civic Space, AGFCS. March 29 2024 | Radio Biafra Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has faulted the military for declaring suspects wanted over the killings of soldiers in the Okuama community in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. Falana in a statement released hours after the Defence headquarters declared the eight persons wanted in connection with the killing of the soldiers, said it is illegal for the military to declare civilians wanted without obtaining a court order. He wants the government to direct the Defence Headquarters to hand over the investigation of the suspects involved in the gruesome murder of the 17 officers and soldiers. The senior lawyer argued that murder is not a military offence to warrant investigation by the Defence Headquarters. “The decision of the Defence Headquarters to declare the murder suspects wanted is completely illegal. Let the federal government direct the Defence Headquarters to hand over the investigation of the suspects involved in the gruesome murder of the 17 officers and soldiers,” Falana said. “It ought to be pointed out that murder is not a military offence to warrant investigation by the Defence Headquarters. Confronted with a monumental difficulty of obtaining justice from a judicial system that is manipulated by the Executives arm, Kanu has been illegally detained in the facility of Nigerian secret police (DSS) since 2021, and battling terrible health conditions without access to proper medication. Amnesty International Nigeria has asked President Bola Tinubu to investigate extrajudicial killings in south-east Nigeria. The human rights group said in a statement posted on its X handle on Thursday that Nigerian security forces led by the military carried out “extrajudicial executions and violence” in the region from August 2015 to August 2016. It said at least 150 “peaceful pro-Biafra protesters” in the South- east were killed by the security forces during the operations within the period. Giving an instance of the extrajudicial killings, Amnesty said residents of Abia State discovered 13 corpses in a pit along the Aba – Port Harcourt Expressway on 13 February 2016, four days after shootings at the National High School in Aba, the commercial hub of the South-eastern state. “Amnesty International repeatedly called on the government of Nigeria to initiate independent investigations into evidence of crimes under international law, and former President (Muhammadu) Buhari repeatedly promised that Amnesty International reports would be looked into. “However, no investigation (was conducted). No justice for victims and their families,” the group said. “To uphold human rights, @officialabat (Tinubu) must investigate this and other gross human rights violations to tame impunity and ensure justice,” it added.
