The military claimed on Tuesday to have seized 288 rifles and 35 rockets from terrorists in Cameroon at the weekend. A statement signed by the Director of Defence Information at Defence Headquarters, Major General Chris Olukolade, attributed the seizure to the collaboration in fighting terrorism in the sub-region, as Cameroon security forces made the huge seizure of arms that were apparently meant for use by terrorists operating in Nigeria.
In addition to the rifles and Rocket Propelled Guns, he said that locally made IEDs were also recovered following a fierce encounter at Abugasse in Cameroon, a location close to the Chadian border.

Other items recovered included pistols, mortar bombs, sub-machine guns and various calibres of ammunitions.

Olukolade said two suspects believed to be major arms suppliers to the terrorists in Nigeria were also nabbed in Abugasse.   They had in their possession a Toyota Jeep and over 50 Cameroonian Passports.

It will be recalled that the Cameroonian authorities recently pledged to back Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.
The renewed offensive by Nigerian troops on terrorists has continued to record various arrests and recovery of arms especially near the country’s border with Cameroon.

Among them, the arrest at a check point during the weekend of a terrorist driving in a green Peugeot vehicle with registration Number Bauchi 264 AA heading to Maiduguri from Alagarno, led to the recovery of 15 AK47 rifles and 12 magazines and various  yet-to-be- assembled rifles.

Olukolade said the offensive on terrorists on various fronts is continuing, adding that the Alagarno, area as well as various points of the Sambisa forest and its suburbs, have been witnessing intense operations since Monday.
Apart from several dead terrorists, he said 14 vehicles which were either being used for operation or hidden by the terrorists in various parts of the forests and theatres have been destroyed.  Various calibre of weapons and ammunitions were also recovered in the course of fighting and subsequent searches.

Intensive air and ground surveillance is also ongoing in the general area, the spokesman added.
