The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar II has appealed to Nigerians to unite and fight the “enemies of our individual and collective progress because that is the only we can solve the challenges facing us as a country.”
He spoke in Jos, Plateau State yesterday when he visited the Gbong Gwom Jos Da Jacob Gyang Buba in his palace. The Sultan was in the state to attend an annual general meeting of the alumni of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS.)
Alhaji Abubakar said, “All of us as Nigerian citizens have common problems of poverty, hunger, unemployment, extremism, insecurity and we will be able to solve these common problems if we are united as a people. We can’t overcome these challenges if we are divided; hence our unity is not negotiable.”
On the prevailing peace in Plateau State, the Sultan said his presence in Jos to attend the NIPSS alumni meeting had confirmed to him that peace had returned to Jos. “I therefore plead with people of Plateau State to sustain the current peace and make it permanent,” he said.
In his response, Da Jacob Gyang Buba said, “Nigeria has reached a stage when all the citizens of Nigeria should have a re-think,” noting that the current national challenges cannot be resolved by the military alone.
“There is no total peace in Plateau if other parts of the country are not at peace. For us to celebrate the prevailing peace on the Plateau, there should be peace all over the country,” he said
