Akwa Ibom State Government and the state police command have dispelled rumours that Boko Haram members were on the verge of wreaking havoc in the state.

The police command, through its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson (DSP), told Daily Sun yesterday that the command was aware of the rumours but they had no substance.

“We have investigated it thoroughly and discovered that there is nothing to worry about. We have put everything in check to ensure that nothing like that happens. So the local press should be careful in carrying such rumours because it could mislead some uninformed members of the society,” Dickson said.

Also, the state government urged residents in the state to remain vigilant, even as it dispelled the rumours of possible attack by members of the Boko Haram group.

Dispelling the rumours, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, said there was need for vigilance by all and sundry due to the unconfirmed text messages allegedly sent by members of the terror group to individuals, news organisations and security agencies in the state.

According to Umana, the text messages had become subjects of investigations by security agencies that were already working to authenticate their true source(s) and motives, with a view to dealing with the perpetrators in the best possible ways.
