Rory McIlroy has hit back at suggestions he is “bored” with golf after making an early exit from the US Open for the second successive year.

The world No 2 was making his first appearance since last month’s Players Championship following a rib injury and struggled for consistency at Erin Hills.

That appeared to prompt 1995 US PGA champion Steve Elkington to post on Twitter: “Rory is so bored playing golf…without Tiger [Woods] the threshold is [probably] 4 majors with 100mill in bank.”

McIlroy delivered a swift response to Elkington’s claim, posting: “More like 200mil… not bad for a “bored” 28 year old… plenty more where that came from” alongside a screenshot of his Wikipedia entry which lists some of his achievements in the game.

The Northern Irishman, who has been restricted to just six competitive starts in 2017, posted an erratic opening-round of 78 before shooting a one-under 71 on Friday.

McIlroy birdied four of his last six holes in Wisconsin, but still missed the cut by four shots.

The 28-year-old, who has previously won the US Open, US PGA and Open Championship, needs only to win the Masters to become the sixth player to complete a career grand slam.

McIlroy has revealed that he intends to play in next week’s Travelers Championship and the Irish Open, Scottish Open and Open Championship in successive weeks in July.
