World No 2 Novak Djokovic has been knocked out of the ATP Acapulco event in Mexico in the quarter-finals by 21-year-old Nick Kyrgios.
Djokovic, 29, was the top seed at the tournament but was seen off in straight sets by Australian Kyrgios, who produced the best performance of his career.
Kyrgios ground out a 7-6, 7-5 victory over the Serb to book his place in the last four of the hardcourt competition.
The one hour, 47-minute clash was the first-ever meeting between the pair, with Kyrgios firing an astonishing 25 aces in the match to edge past 12-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic.
“It’s a big win,” Kyrgios said. “I was a little bit nervous because I’m sure the crowd was rooting for Novak.
“He’s one of the greatest players of all time, but I’m playing with confidence. My serve is the best part of my game, and I had one of my best serving matches tonight.”
The young Australian’s serve proved the difference, with him earning just one break point over Djokovic throughout the match but winning a staggering 81 percent of his first serve points.
Kyrgios will face Kyle Edmund’s conqueror Sam Querrey for a place in the final.
“He is a big-serving American, I played him before, and I know what to expect,” Kyrgios added.
Grand Slam winners Rafael Nadal and Marin Cilic will contest the other semi-final in Mexico.
