Members claiming to be part of Islamic State in Nigeria have released a video which they say shows the killing of 11 Christians. The jihadis said the killings were part of a campaign to avenge the death of IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who died in an American raid on his compound back in October.

The video reportedly shows one person being shot and the other 10 being beheaded. According to the BBC, the victims were all male, but there are no further details about the men.

The killers said they were captured in north-eastern Nigeria over the past few weeks. A minute-long video of the slayings was released by IS, and analysts say it was released to coincide with Christmas.

The footage, filmed outdoors, was released on Boxing Day. Despite the death of al-Baghdadi and collapse of the IS caliphate in the Middle-East, intelligence officials reckon the extremists have regrouped and are like “al Qaeda on steroids”.
