It has emerged that National Leader of opposition All Progressives’ Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and another APC chieftain, Senator Bukola Saraki stormed Kano to prevail on Governor Rabiu Kwankwanso to appoint Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi emir. Reports had filtered earlier Sunday that Kano king makers had recommended Ciroman Kano, Alhaji Ibrahim Ado Bayero as the new emir.

Some top officials of the state government had told Pointblanknews.com that the lot had fallen on Bayero, eldest son of the late emir.

However, in a dramatic twist the Secretary to Kano State government Sunday evening announced Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the suspended governor of Central Bank of Nigeria as the new emir.

Sanusi’s selection had instantly sparked riots in several parts of the ancient city. Several protesters chanted anti-Kwankwanso slogans, claiming he had appointed Lamido to settle political scores.

Pointblanknews.com gathered that Tinubu and Saraki had arrived in Kano and piled pressure on the governor to pick Lamido, a man believed to enjoy the support of APC.

One source claimed that Tinubu and Saraki struck a deal with Kwankwanso to help him secure the APC presidential ticket ahead of the 2015 elections.

Kwakwanso, who recently defected to APC, is running out his second and last term, and cannot therefore seek election as governor.

Seemingly lending credence to the claims of interference by APC, shortly after reports that Bayero’s eldest had been selected, Saraki tweeted that was impossible.

“I am in Government House Kano, and no announcement has been made on the new emir,” tweeted Saraki.

Moments after Sanusi was named the new emir, Saraki again tweeted, “Congratulations to Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano. I wish His Royal Highness a successful reign.”

Kwara State governor and Saraki’s protege, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed and a former Minister, Federal Captal Territory Administration, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai were among the first persons to congratulate the new emir.

El’Rufai, a chieftain of APC jeered on his twitter handle, “SLS (Sanusi Lamido Sanusi) is the Emir of Kano. Jonathanians can go jump into the lagoon.”

Lamido had a running battle with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) -led federal government over his often controversial comments on the state of the economy.

The relationship had completely frostied culminating in President Goodluck Jonathan announcing  the suspension from office of Sanusi as CBN governor.
