Sergio Garcia has set his sights on a big 2017 after making a winning start to his European Tour campaign at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

Garcia posted a final-round 69 at Emirates Golf Club to finish three shots clear of Henrik Stenson and complete a wire-to-wire victory – his first European Tour success since the 2014 Qatar Masters.

The Spaniard moves up to third in the Race to Dubai standings with the win, which is also set to take him back inside the world’s top 10.

Garcia took a three-shot lead into the final day and remained top of the leaderboard throughout the round, although admitted he had to stay focused along the closing stretch.

“I think it was tighter than everybody probably thought but I’m very happy to have played the way I played,” Garcia said.

“I was talking to Henrik and even without playing his best he was still always there and didn’t give anything away.

“I was trying to stay positive and make sure I stayed as aggressive as possible. I stayed very calm and I was able to get it done. It’s great to be in there (inside the top 10). So hopefully this is just the beginning of a great year.”

Stenson was within two of the lead with four holes to play but saw his hopes fade with a bogey at the 15th, as Garcia birdied from close range to seal victory.

“Obviously I was chasing all day and I was trying to push, even though I didn’t play my best,” Stenson said. “I came to the Middle East with very little practice and I managed to pick up some pace moving forward with my game.

“My putting and even my striking hasn’t been my best, but I feel like I’ve progressed in some of the things I’ve been working on.

“It’s a good, solid start for the year, and gives us some momentum to go home and practice and get ready for Mexico.”
