Luke Donald and Jimmy Walker were among the players to see their PGA Tour play-off hopes ended at the Northern Trust, as Bubba Watson extended his season.

Only the top 100 in the FedExCup standings after the opening play-off event progress through to the Deutsche Bank Championship, with Donald ending the week in 105th spot and Walker in 111th.

Former world No 1 Donald bogeyed his five two holes to finish on five over and tied-49th, while last year’s PGA champion Walker saw his hopes ended with a missed cut.

Watson began the week outside of the top 100 but grabbed a share of 10th spot at Glen Oaks Club – his best PGA Tour performance since June – to qualify for this week’s tournament in Boston.

Harold Varner III and David Lingmerth also moved inside the bubble with tied-20th and tied-29th finishes respectively, with Byeong Hun An, Robert Garrigus and Seung-Yul Noh all missing the cut and dropping out.

IN (previous week’s position in brackets)

72 (113) Bubba Watson

87 (103) David Lingmerth

91 (123) Harold Varner III

OUT (previous week’s position in brackets)

102 (96) Byeong Hun An

109 (99) Robert Garrigus

110 (100) Seung-Yul Noh

The field size reduces again for the third play-off event, the BMW Championship from September 14-17, with only the top 70 in the FedExCup standings after TPC Boston making it through.

Watson, former world No1 Adam Scott and Rafa Cabrera Bello are among the players currently below that mark and in need of a strong performance this week to continue their campaigns.
