Akpabio Governor18 May 2013

The Governor of one of the oil producing states in South East Nigeria Godswill Akpabio has bemoaned the incurable corruption in the country and claim that corruption is the most likely reason why Nigeria has failed as a country.

Here is what the Governor said during a session with journalists at Government House in Uyo yesterday.

“Our country is drowning in a sea of corruption. What is wrong with Nigeria is the poor leadership by past leaders which has led to the crisis of corruption. Corruption ranges from stealing to inflation of contracts, and, it occurs when leadership fails in management of resources or lacks the ability and courage to plug loopholes in the economy. It is corruption when government leaders take decisions on the basis of tribal sentiments rather than on the basis of common sense. It is corruption when projects are sited near the homes of those in authority and not in proximity to raw materials. It is corruption when a NAFDAC official tests a drug and certifies it good because he or she has been financially compromised. That wrongly certified drug would then become a menace to society by causing the deaths of several innocent citizens. It is corruption when a Customs official allows dangerous weapons to be smuggled into this country – as such weapons will be later used to kill the people.”

It is unusual for those in authority in Nigeria to acknowledge the damaging impact of corruption on the lives of ordinary people. Perhaps his comment on this thorny issue and silent killer of aspiration will lead to a rethink in how the world assess the impact of rampant graft on the lives of impoverished populations not just in Nigeria but across black Africa.
