Paul Waring and Stuart Manley secured places in this year’s Open Championship field after finishing joint runners-up at the Joburg Open.

The British pair both finished the weather-affected tournament on 14 under par, one stroke adrift of home winner Darren Fichardt.

All three qualify for the third major of the year via the Open Qualifying Series, where three spots were available for those finishing inside the top 10 in South Africa and not already exempt.

Fichardt’s fifth European Tour title gives him a first major appearance since 2010, while Waring will play in The Open for the first time since the tournament was last held at Royal Birkdale in 2008.

Manley fired seven birdies during his final round at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington GC, with the Welshman closing his five-under 67 with back-to-back gains.

A share of second equals Manley’s best-ever finish on the European Tour, booking the 38-year-old make a maiden major appearance this summer.

This week’s event was the third of 15 tournaments in the Open Qualifying Series, offering up to 44 places in the field for this year’s 146th Open.
