Credit Carlos Garcia Rawlins/Reuters CARACAS, Venezuela — At least 68 people died when a fire erupted during a riot at a jail in the northern city of Valencia, the attorney general said late Wednesday.
The announcement hours came after crowds of anguished family members had gathered outside the facility, some weeping and others facing off with police officers in riot gear. Officials had released little information throughout the day.
Tarek Saab, the attorney general, said four prosecutors had been named to investigate the cause and circumstances. All but two of the victims were men, he said.
The facility, attached to a police station, had a capacity of about 60 detainees, workers at the scene said, although prison crowding has often resulted in Venezuelan detention facilities exceeding their capaci..

Tariff Battle: Where the U.S. and Chinese Moves May Lead

Tariff Battle: Where the U.S. and Chinese Moves May Lead Photo As Beijing absorbed the news about American tariffs, China responded Friday with tariffs of its own. Markets around the world tumbled on the trade restrictions, but the measures are likely to barely dent the Chinese economy. Credit Roman Pilipey/EPA, via Shutterstock President Trump pushed forward with a two-pronged trade offensive this week, enacting tariffs on imported aluminum and steel on Friday, a day after announcing levies on up to $60 billion in Chinese goods. The target of both actions is China, a country that Mr. Trump has called “an economic enemy” of the United States.
For now, the administration has given exemptions from the first set of tariffs to multiple nations, making it clear that the main point is to curb the influx of cheap Chinese metals.
Beijing’s initial response has been muted, setting the stage for what could be a methodical escalation of retaliatory measures. The Chinese government announced Frida..

Uber Ordered to Take Its Self-Driving Cars Off Arizona Roads
SAN FRANCISCO — Uber was ordered to suspend testing of its autonomous vehicles on Arizona roads Monday evening, eight days after one of its cars struck and killed a woman in Tempe.
State officials said the ride-hailing service had failed to meet an expectation that it would prioritize public safety as it tested the technology.
“The incident that took place on March 18 is an unquestionable failure to comply with this expectation,” Gov. Doug Ducey of Arizona wrote in a letter sent to Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber’s chief executive. “Arizona must take action now.”
Uber had already suspended all testing of its cars in Arizona, San Francisco, Pittsburgh and Toronto.

Credit The J. Paul Getty Trust For decades, visitors to the world-famous tomb of King Tutankhamen in Egypt have noticed ugly brown spots covering the wall paintings lining the burial chamber. And for years the Egyptian authorities worried that these blotches might be microorganisms fueled by humidity and the sweaty bodies of tourists. Now, scientists from the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles have completed an analysis — determining that the spots are not alive and not a threat to any of the tomb’s illustrious attractions.
This study was part of larger, multimillion-dollar, nine-year-long collaboration between the Getty and Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities designed to assess the condition of t..
