Tottenham have confirmed Harry Winks is out for the rest of the season after sustaining ligament damage to his left ankle during Saturday’s win at Burnley.

The 21-year-old midfielder had to be carried off on a stretcher during the 2-0 Premier League win at Turf Moor after an awkward collision with Clarets defender Stephen Ward.

A statement from the club said: “Harry Winks will continue to be monitored by our medical team during his recovery and will be unavailable for the remainder of the season.”

The news will come as a blow for England Under-21 international Winks, who was making just his third Premier League start of the season for Spurs, and he joins team-mates Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Erik Lamela on the sidelines.

Mauricio Pochettino said on Monday he believes the youngster can grow into one of England’s finest midfielders.

“He was playing well and I’m sure in time would have been considered by Gareth Southgate,” Pochettino said.

“He is a very good prospect, a player who is dynamic and aggressive. He needs time to be consistent but in time he can be one of the best midfielders for England.”

Tottenham will also continue to assess Victor Wanyama ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Swansea after he sustained a back problem against the Clarets.

Spurs’ win at Burnley cut the lead at the top to seven points with nine games remaining after Chelsea were beaten at home 2-1 by Crystal Palace.
