Novak Djokovic moved into the Madrid Masters quarter-finals in relative ease defeating Felicano Lopez but there was one moment of controversy in the first set.
Djokovic led 5-4 with the score at deuce on Lopez’s serve when confusion struck. A forehand from Lopez appeared to be sailing long of the baseline when the Serb appeared to stop play only to play a shot that the Spaniard did not chase down.
Lopez argued to French umpire Damien Dumusois that Djokovic’s apparent stoppage caused Lopez to not carry on playing the point but Dumusois disagreed saying that Djokovic had not called to the umpire saying the shot was long.
Djokovic, the defending Madrid Masters champion, prevailed 6-4 7-5 setting up a meeting with Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals.
