Amongst the many issues arising from the disrupted Restructuring Summit organised and hosted by the infamous Ohaneze Ndigbo in Awka, Anambra state on Monday 21st May 2018, was the statement credited to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. In his speech, he highlighted that the Congress of Politicians in Igboland, has de-proscribed the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in their bid to calm frayed nerves. The Senator, before the global community, as transmitted in a live broadcast by Channels Television Network, emphasized that the action of the Congress of Igbo Politicians was premised on the obvious need to douse tensions following the proscription of IPOB activities within the Biafra territory by the Ohaneze Ndigbo group, South East Governors and other political elites of Igbo extraction. Senator Abaribe stated that it remained the wish of all the political class in Biafraland, to see that IPOB is de-proscribed for peace to reign in Nigeria.
The family members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), resident within Biafraland, armed with the knowledge that the constitutional right and power of de-proscribing the IPOB activities rest squarely on the Nigerian government, viewed these politicians as merely acting under the pressure of remorsefulness for their folly in lending support to the actions of the Islamic government of Nigeria against the IPOB. All the political predators from Biafraland, are presently and grossly, loosing relevance and control of the political terrain, occasioned by their parallel inclinations against the Biafra restoration drive. This is gradually and imminently snowballing into an unprecedented revolution that may not be contained if not proactively handled. Taking a retrospective look at the events of the inglorious restructuring summit in Awka, on Monday 21st of May 2018, it is glaringly clear to both the political gladiators and the restive Biafran masses that there exists, palpable tension hovering over the horizon.
The only panacea to this is not the stampeded kangaroo declaration that IPOB activities have been de-proscribed as portrayed by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, ostensibly to score cheap political points that will cushion their nursed re-election bids, but to unanimously prevail on the Nigerian government to timely avert the impending catastrophe by putting down modalities that will enhance the conduction of a Biafra referendum. To the Biafran people, the de-proscription declaration by the Congress of Igbo Politicians as spelt out by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe amounts to futility. If really these political elites are interested in quelling the raging fire against Nigeria, resulting from the growing insistence of overwhelming number of Biafrans that referendum be conducted, then the politicians must make haste while it is yet day.
It should be noted that the Nigerian armed forces were drafted once again in their numbers to the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, the venue of the ill- conceived summit, to arrest, maim and kill Biafran youths without any provocation and retaliation. Let it be sounded very clear at this juncture, that it may turn out not to be so tomorrow. If the Ohaneze Ndigbo socio-political club led by Nnia Nwodo and the South East Governors could wholesomely understand and extricate themselves from their folly, it will then be better for them to align forces with the commendable intents of the leadership of the IPOB, and concertedly push for Biafra referendum. This is the only pathway.
The clock is fastly ticking and the patience of Biafrans in their intimidating numbers, especially the youths are increasingly waning. A stitch in time they say, saves nine.
