obasanjo-and-jonathanA cross section of Northern leaders have called for a thorough probe of the weighty allegations leveled against President Goodluck Jonathan by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. They said the allegations border on national security andcapable of tearing the country apart.Obasanjo had in a letter dated December 2, 2013 to Jonathan and made public on Wednesday accused the president of funding a killer squad with 1000 Nigerians already on their watch list; of entrenching the culture of impunity and aiding corruption; of fueling the crisis in the ruling party, PDP;  and of desperately seeking a second term in of.ce after making a commitment to several stakeholders not to contest in 2015, among others. The president has in turn hit back at Obasanjo describing the allegations in the 18-page letter as in-decorous and provocative. But reacting to the letter and the president’s response so far, some Northern leaders accused Jonathan of only attacking the messenger rather than addressing the message.A high pro.le leader of the pan-North socio-political organization, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Senator Joseph Kennedy Waku who is the National Vice Chairman of the body stated that the allegations are too weighty to be ig-nored by the nation.According to him” for the .rst time, I will agree with Obasanjo but the consensus among some of the Northern leaders so far spoken to on this matter is that the National Assembly should investigate these allegations thoroughly. We advise Obasanjo to send this letter of.cially to the National Assembly to enable them probe the allega-tions therein and call for a public hearing.“We elected a president, not a warlord who has to set up a killer squad for the purpose of eliminating 1000 Nigerians already on their list even two years before 2015.As such, we cannot brush Obasanjo’s allegations aside given his position as a two time president of Nigeria who has access to intelligence.

These allegations constitute a coup against the Nigerian people, central to the security of the nation and its survival.” Second Republic parliamentarian, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, who spoke in Kano, insisted that nobody should fault former President Obsanjo’s open letter to President Jonathan, saying that his views in the let-ter are factual and true.Junaid, a social critic and former national chairman of the Peoples Solidarity Party(PSP) said that by the open letter, Chief Obasanjo has acquitted himself of the negative actions of the present government and the possible consequences of their claims.According to him “ I can understand those who are congenital haters of Obasanjo.  I am not par-ticularly a keen admirer of Obasanjo, but the fact re-mains that even if a devil  speaks the truth, you take the truth and leave the devil alone.“Everything Obsanjo stated in his letter regard-ing the unremitted money to the Central Bank is true. It has been said in a written communications to the president by the Governor of the Central Bank wo by de.nition is the principle adviser of the president on economic matters. He told the president that N8 trillion is missing. That is the equivalent of two annual budget of the entire country.”On the alleged 2015 Jonathan’s ambition, Junaid noted that Obasanjo only echoed what had been said by several parties that Jonathan promised to run for one tenure. “What Obsanjo did was to bring out the crystal lies that Jonathan has been telling the country about the status of his ambition. It is now clear that Jonathan has made up his mind to go for 2015. In other words, his own personal ambition is more important than the fate of the country.”“Obsanjo now has come to say that even if you didn’t tell anybody, you told me. And that was the condition in which I endorsed you for 2011, knowing fully well that it was going to be your last tenure”A third Republic Senator who did not want his name in print described former President Obasanjo’s letter to President Jonathan as a good message coming from a bad messenger. The Senator from the North-East geo political zone however added that Obasanjo has spoken the minds of well meaning Nigerians, advising that Jonathan and his cabinet members should take the message with all seriousness to avert a future disas-ter.His words, “It is a very good message coming from a bad messenger. This not withstanding, OBJ spoke the mind of well meaning Nigerians and the message should be taken very seriously by the president and his aides to avoid eminent disaster”.
