These are pictures of riot policemen and women in Nigeria doing what they do best-which is extort, intimidate and brutalise innocent citizens going about their lawful business. You will be forgiven for thinking that there is war going on or a state of emergency in Nigeria going by the number of fire arms on the streets courtesy of the Nigerian Police. There is no riot or breach of the peace yet they are out on the road daily extorting money from long suffering law abiding citizens because they have guns issued by Nigerian government to kill anyone that refuses to hand over money when asked to do so at their shabbily constructed check points.

The only difference between these men and armed criminals is that criminals are at least honest about their intentions but these riot and regular policemen/women and hundreds of thousands of them all over Nigeria steal for the corrupt security apparatus in Nigeria that is meant to be safeguarding the lives and properties of citizens. Those that benefit from this state sanctioned daylight robbery include the Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police, and state commissioners of Police down to Divisional Police Officers. They all get a percentage of the loot taken at gun point from innocent hard working and traumatised people on the streets of Nigeria on a daily basis.

These men and women of Nigerian law enforcement are nothing but official armed robbers and criminals who steal for their masters the government of Nigeria. Why policemen should be carrying fully loaded assault rifles in broad daylight when the country is not at war to intimidate, terrorise and extort money from people in a country where there is no routine gun ownership defies logic.

Nigeria was created by Great Britain and for those that don’t know British police are unarmed and that is why there is adherence to the rule of law. In Nigeria the police can and do kill at will without the remotest possibility of prosecution. Where then did Nigeria learn the primitive habit of arming a civilian police service when their colonial masters the British have an unarmed police service patrolling the streets of United Kingdom despite the threat of terrorism? The answer can be found in the mindset of the politicians that assumed power when the British left. They saw the gun as the means through which the state .i.e. those of them in power can continue the brutal repression and subjugation of poor illiterate masses. In truth some of the so-called nationalist leaders in Nigeria were no different and in some instances were actually worse than the colonial masters they replaced.

No right thinking person would want to be part of country where law enforcement personnel are in essence armed robbers. The only way to put an end to this type of barbarism is to restructure Nigeria and let constituent nationalities decide their own future. Every facet of life in Nigeria is imbued with criminality that can’t be eradicated by wishful thinking alone. The Police Force in Nigeria as it is known is an instrument of coercion to enslave the population and stop them from revolting against the misrule, criminality and incompetence of the political class.

On the contrary, compare the British Police above patrolling the Street without a Gun.
