Rotimi-OlowoA member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Rotimi Olowo, has said that the country will not break up as a result of the National Conference.

Olowo, Chairman, House Committee on Works and Infrastructure, made the assertion in an interview with in Lagos on Sunday.

He said: “Nigeria will not disintegrate as a result of the national conference; such pronouncement is misleading and incorrect.

“We have become united through inter-tribal marriages, and we are connected with one another in one way or the other, so, the national dialogue will not split us,” he said.

According to Olowo (APC-Shomolu I), if the conference is properly handled it will bring about justice, development and fairness to the citizenry.

The lawmaker added that people must be well represented in order to carry them along to move the country forward.

He urged the advisory committee to see every Nigerian as one and not to treat any tribe or ethnic group as minority.

“Being a politician, a retired military general, doesn’t matter and the issue of minority or majority should be avoided, everybody should be subjected to the same opportunity,” he said.

Another lawmaker, Mr Bisi Yusuf (APC-Alimosho I), also told NAN that the intention of the national conference was not for the country to break up but to restructure it.

Yusuf, who is Chairman, House Committee on Transportation, Commerce and Industry, said the conference should be handled in such a way that it would serve its purpose.

He stressed the need to include all sector in the conference, and that people must be given the opportunity to choose their representatives.

“We are all Nigerians; groups must have a stake and be given equal right at the conference, be it military, traders, politicians and civil societies.

“Politicians are also human being, they must also partake in the conference, but not as a party member,” he said.

The spokesman, Northern Elders Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, said the North was not afraid of the break-up of Nigeria if its citizens vote for it at the conference. (NAN)
