National Forum of Enugu Peoples Association (NAFEPA) an umbrella body of Enugu State elite clubs and associations has urged delegates at the national conference to advocate devolution of powers with a weak centre, a strong region and a six geopolitical zones structure for the nation.

In a communique issued at the end of its quarterly meeting in Enugu, the forum noted that the power of the government at the centre did not not allow for effective development of the constituent parts of the federation.

In the statement signed by Chief Pius Ike and Mr. Sunday Odio, chairman and secretary respectively, the forum commended the Federal Government for making it possible for such a conference to be convened at a time like this in the history of the country.

It also also urged the delegates to enforce the constitutional provision on indigeneship/residency status just as it advised that the issue of quota system in educational institutions should be de-emphasized in favour of merit.

The forum demanded that efforts should be geared towards the revival of the coal industry to harness the surplus coal deposit in Enugu State to create jobs for the people and the entire South-East.

It commended the state government for sending youths to Songhai Farm to train on practical agriculture and urged for empowerment of the trained youths, by providing them loan facilities to enable them practice what they had learnt. He said: “This will help to reduce youth restiveness and crime rate.”

On the general elections in 2015, the forum advised that the election should be free and fair, warning that youths must not be used as thugs. It expressed support for 35 per cent affirmation for women in political and other appointments.

Also, it commended the state government for putting in place the Neighbourhood/Vigilance Groups and condemned the bombing and killings in some parts of Nigeria particularly in the North, and encouraged Igbo in such areas to be security conscious all the time.
