Roger Federer appears set to extend his career for another three years after signing a deal to play at the Swiss Indoors until 2019.

The 35-year-old’s future had appeared to be in question after a six-month injury absence, but he defied that to claim his 18th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

He has now signed a three-year deal with the Swiss Indoors event, which he has won seven times since making his debut in 1998.

Federer will be 38 in the final year of the contract to play in hometown Basel, an event he had to miss in 2016 because of injury.

He said in a statement: “I cannot wait to return to my home country in the autumn. Playing in Basel is always a highlight of the year.”

Federer is due to return from a post-Australian Open break next week at the Dubai Duty Free Championships.
