Kidnap-Kingpin

Kidnap-KingpinBoko Haram, the terrorist group that has made parts of northern Nigeria virtually ungovernable, is desperate to extend its campaign of violence to the country’s south.

Information available to News Express indicates that the misguided Islamists have started making overtures to potential partners in the south with a view to penetrating the region.

An impeccable source who spoke with News Express disclosed that Boko Haram leaders have made contacts with some kidnap kingpins in the south with a view to convincing them to join forces with them since both parties have grievances against the Nigerian society. The source specifically mentioned the recently apprehended Delta kidnap lord, Kelvin Oniarah, as one of those contacted by Boko Haram.

“I can assure you that the federal government is aware of this and will put the information to good use,” said the source.

News Express learnt that a high-profile former victim of Kelvin’s kidnap gang has volunteered information in this regard to a serving minister. The man, a lawyer by profession, reportedly confirmed getting the information during his days in the kidnappers’ den.

Boko Haram, which roughly translates “Western education is a sin”, has launched a campaign of violence since 2009, resulting in the death of upwards of 3,500 persons. Efforts by the group to gain a fooyhold in the south have so far been frustrated by security agents.
