BarajeThe Kawu Baraje-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) yesterday gave further indication of failure of peace talks.

In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, it stated that alleged belligerence of the Alhaji Bamanga Tukur-led national leadership of the party towards genuine reconciliation would cost President Goodluck Jonathan victory at the 2015 presidential elections.

Although President Jonathan had not officially declared his intention to run for fresh term, the Kawu Baraje faction listed, Rivers, Kano, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kwara, Niger and Kebbi as states where he would lose.

Governors Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aliyu Wamakko, Abdulfatai Ahmed, Aliyu Babangida, Sule Lamido and Murtala Nyako of Rivers, Kano, Sokoto, Kwara, Niger, Jigawa and Adamawa states, respectively were the aggrieved governors present at the declaration of the faction of the party penultimate weekend. Seidu Dankigari of Kebbi state was however not present.

Giving its political arithmetic of voting strength of the states, the Baraje faction in the statement noted that no presidential election would be won without favourable votes from those states.

“Mr. President should not be deceived by some party leaders who are making him believe that he can do without us. Most of these leaders cannot, under a properly organised free and fair elections, win their wards.

“It is obvious that no presidential election in Nigeria can be won without states like Rivers, Kano, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kwara, Niger and Kebbi states and these are states we are controlling.

“Check the past general elections and see that some of these media-created PDP leaders had no followers in their states at the moment talk less of making any impact in 2015.”

The faction however admonished the party elders committed to genuine reconciliation not to be deterred, while it restated the nobility of its cause.

“We appeal to them never to tire until they achieve their set objectives. We also appeal to Alhaji Tukur and his NWC to respect these distinguished party’s elders and give peace a chance. The ball is in his court.

“The truth will always see us through. Actually, what are we asking for is that internal democracy be allowed to thrive within the party and that Tukur and his undemocratic gang should not see the party as their personal property in which they can wake up any day and fire whoever they dreamt about in their sleep. We will no longer condone such undemocratic reasoning and acts. Enough is enough! No matter how many times he wants to take us to court to ask that we be committed to prison, we are not deterred or afraid of going to prison,” the faction stated.
